The Parthenon

Detail of the east pediment.

Notice the small holes on the architrave beneath the triglyphs: these held the bronze letters of an inscription honouring the Roman emperor Nero (dated to AD 61/2). Under each metope is a larger hole; each held a bronze shield (1.25 m in diameter) dedicated by Alexander the Great after his victory over the Persians at the battle of Granikos (334 BC).
