Architectural fragments

Photographs © David Gill, 2001

Architectural fragments of archiac temples built into the north wall of the akropolis, adjacent to the Erechtheion. The unfluted column drums - twenty-nine in all - come from the predecessor of the Parthenon. These visible fragments may have been intended as a deliberate attempt to mark the impiety of the Persian destruction of the sanctuary of Athena.
